Birth Order and Personality: Fact or Myth?

What modern science actually says about firstborns, middles, and last-borns

8 min read

For decades, many believed birth order determines personality: the eldest responsible and leadership-oriented, the youngest adventurous, the middle child diplomatic. These ideas spread enormously through popular culture. But what does modern science actually say?

Alfred Adler: The Original Theory

Austrian psychoanalyst Alfred Adler was first to systematically theorize birth order effects. He saw birth order creating "different psychological environments" within the same family: the eldest experiences being "dethroned" by a new sibling โ€” a formative moment he believed generates drives for control and responsibility.

What Large-Scale Studies Show

A study tracking over 370,000 people published in the Journal of Research in Personality found birth order explains less than 1% of personality variation. Existing differences are too small to have practical significance in real life.

A German study following 20,000 people found a slight firstborn advantage in measured intelligence โ€” not genetic, but because parents typically spend more cognitive interaction time with first children. This effect is negligible practically.

Why We Believe It Anyway

The Barnum Effect again: descriptions of "the eldest" contain traits anyone would readily accept โ€” "responsible, leadership-oriented, driven." Who doesn't want to be described that way?

What Actually Shapes Personality

The quality of the parent-child bond, the values and principles instilled, early life experiences, and cultural environment โ€” these are the real influences on character development.

Every child lives a different story even within the same family โ€” but their birth order is not the destiny governing their path or the verdict on their character.
